Wound Empire was recorded and mixed last summer at Earhammer Studios in Oakland, California by Greg “The Wizard of Doom” Wilkinson (Brainoil, Pallbearer, Atriarch, Noothgrush, etc.) and mastered at Audiosiege Mastering studios in Portland, Oregon by Brad Boatright (Wolves In The Throne Room, Nails, Sunn O))), Sleep etc.). The album is undoubtedly a release to look out for in the underground realms of all things heavy and dark, and is a must for fans of Altar of Plagues, Inter Arma, Thou, Samothrace, Amenra, Tragedy, Indian, Wolvhammer, Unearthly Trance and such.
On February 10th, 2015, Wound Empire will be made available on 12″ vinyl LP through Fragile Branch Recordings (US), Vendetta Records (EU/DE), 7Degrees Records (EU/DE) and Shove Records (EU/IT), on CD by COF Records (formerly known as Church Ov Fuck – UK), on cassette tape co-released by Sentient Ruin in collaboration with An Out Recordings, and digitally again through Sentient Ruin. For the LP, there will be 600 copies pressed, of which 500 will be pitch black and 100 on clear wax with black and grey haze. The CD will be in an edition of 100 hand-assembled, four-panel, gatefold, vinyl-styled cardboard jackets with a 6mm spine and insert. The tape will come in 100 units as a five-panel U-card in a clear Norelco box with a cardboard outer sleeve. The cover art, design and layout on all formats of Wound Empire was handled by the band’s friend Kevin Gan Yuen of Bay Area cult blackened noise miscreants Sutekh Hexen.

Formed in 2010 and coming out of complete obscurity, these four obscure slime mongers from Oakland have crafted a debut that is both mesmerizing in its seemingly effortless ability to constructmassive and enveloping soundscapes, and annihilating in it's brutal, relentless, and merciless sonic grasp on the listener's synapses. With forty minutes of music divided solely among three mammoth tracks, this bile-drenched debut is clearly a vessel for music that has at it's core the urge and primordial instinct to drag the listener into a vast, violent, and obscure world all of its own. The title leapt at me when I first heard about it! I think that "Thanks for your hostility" is the best Agathocles record title ever. But then, I've been a little disappointed when I listened to the musical content itself; probably by the inadequat sound production. It's very clear and actually powerful, but guitars sound a little weak and find a way a little bit more technical than before, drums also have a slightly snare, feeble sound... vocals are great though, well, at least on the grindcore songs, because there's a very high percentage of crusty/hardcore influences on songs like "Until it bleeds", "Hatred is the cure", "Cheers humanity cheers", "No use... hatred" & many more! But all in all I truly enjoy their crust side there! Then, maybe the sound is too clear to play crust here too... But anyway, some riffs reminded me good old crust bands like Mob 47 and alikes... So, it's nice! And yes! Agathocles is always Agathocles and their mincing feeling is always alive and well; There are many grindcore tracks, with fast drumming, growls, tortured screams and an abundant use of splattery vocal effects! The great songs are "Criminalisation of strange behaviour", "Strangulation", "Life control", "Be your own god", "He cared" & more.... The lyrics are always socially aware and always more sarcastic... The cover artwork is not a masterpiece. Well, this is although a 40 tracks LP of really intense musical aggression! It will probably please to those more into hardcore & crust, but it has a big portion of great grind! So recquires the listening of grind freaks too. Obviously a must-have for Agathocles completists. The bonus material (11 tracks) was recorded in the Natianal Radio Station in april 96 and was broadcasted a few month later.

Years after frequent attempts of AGATHOCLES trying to get into the USA for making a tour, being refused entrance into the land of freedom several times in the 90's and last time in 2015, AGATHOCLES managed to get into the "country of freedom and hope" in summer 2016. 12 years after CD version of this split by Apathic View Production, finally 12-inch vinyl comes from DIY cooperation between Alternative Record Label, Extreme Terror Production , Grindfather Productions and NIC Records.Everyone knows Agathocles, so no need to long introduction of this living underground legend! Their side in short: a live set from 28 February 1997 in Tongerlo/Belgium - great setlist (including "Kill your fucking idols", "Trust? Not me!", "Cheers mankind cheers" & more, 11 songs in total) and strong micecore/grindcore sound quality. This was the line-up from "Thanks for yur hostility" and "Humarrogance" times so you know what to expect from AGx! Few words about H.407 then: a grindcore/crust punk band from Ropczyce/Poland, active between 1999-2008. Released 2 tapes "Obietnica – opium dla mas" and "Kraty wolności", shared splits with Suffering Mind, Disarm, Human Error, Untamed and ...Agathocles. H.407 started as crust punk with grind influences to move harder and harder into grindcore brutality (check their split with Suffering Mind). Their side contains 13 songs of grindcore/crust plus cover of legendary Dezerter "Szwindel". After H.407 split-up in Summer 2008, vocalist Tukan together with Daro, Kuchar and Cieleń (all 3 from Suffering Mind) created death metal/crust machine Hellisheaven. The Cologne band ALTERI has made their debut with "miseria". Right away "miseria" is a roller of punk, crust, metal and d-beat. The thing is absolutely stunning. THere isn't a cage for their sound structure. ALTERI don't conform to convention and can not be locked up in a cage. The tracks have a clean groove between crunchy crust-hardcore and heavy death-metal.

Enth play funeral doom with a real old school death metal feel to it. There's a real gloomy, cloying atmosphere to it that very much brings to mind early 90s European doom bands - remember Sempiternal Deathreign? Bang on! There's a lot going on here; there's a melancholic piano line and what sounds like violin near the end. Fantastic stuff, and seriously some of the best music of this style I have heard in ages.
Amarok are more straightforward and play a style more similar to the new american sludge/doom wave of the past few years. Dual screaming/growling vocals (VERY Alan Dubin!), repetitive and slow, ultra low-end riffing and sparse but solid, driving percussion, this will definitely appeal to those into Thou, Salome, Cough and all that.

Italians are responsible for quite a few of my favourite things: sumptuous wines, indulgent cuisine and eminent suits. With their debut album, Awaken, Amouth have proved Italians are also pretty damn good at writing post metal.
Awaken certainly is an interesting beast. It’s melancholy but in an uplifting way. It’s seemingly simple, while in actuality, fairly complex. It pairs dreamy, shoegaze guitar lines with vocals straight out of hell. Awaken feels like an album full of paradoxes, juxtapositions and dichotomies.
Self-proclaimed minimalists, Amouth provides what feels like a stripped down take on post-metal compared to Pelican, Isis or even Russian Circles. This makes the album feel more accessible to newcomers to the genre. Despite complex layering, one can still follow what each instrument is doing. This accessibility can also be attributed to Amouth’s songwriting prowess. As with bands such as Porcupine Tree, while each instrument may be playing a complicated part (rhythmically or otherwise), you don’t necessarily notice because they all gel so well.
The journey each track takes you on is both enjoyable and evocative. Despite making use of traditional post metal song structures, focused on evolving a repeated theme or riff to a crescendo, these themes don’t wear out the listener. This may be due to the fact that all the base riffs are rock solid, and some, such as in “City of Gold”, even have a sludge metal/stoner rock groove to them.
The songs on Awaken are constructed from several consistent building blocks. Hypnotic, repeated riffs; irregular rhythmic patterns; the pre-requisite amount of palm-muted chugging for any metal band; shoegaze soundscapes; ambient interludes; and shouted vocals that would make Aaron Turner proud.
While prominence is given to his powerful roars, Gabriele Maurizi’s clean vocals have been kept lower in the mix, a la Electric Wizard. His deep cleans add another dimension to the tracks, and I wouldn’t have minded them being a bit more prominent (especially in the first movement of “The Priest”).
“City of Gold” would have to be my favourite track on the album. The song starts with Maurizi shouting over a mammoth aural assault, featuring some of the grooviest riffs on the album. This soon fades away, making way for a whispering guitar line. The contemplative, quieter movement is the calm after the storm, the first ray of sunshine as the cloud parts: it’s still grim, but there’s hope. The entire album has that kind of vibe. After a slow and steady instrumental build, the track regains its former ferocity, and just keeps building until it suddenly drops away into the following track, “Untold”.
My only criticism is that a few of the album’s ambient passages, such as the one at the end of the title track, occasionally outstay their welcome. While they provide a refreshing respite from the crushing guitar tones and pounding drums, the album would have flowed better if these were just a tad shorter.
Overall, Awaken is a balanced, cohesive album. Amouth’s evocative, minimalistic brand of music is a great addition to the post metal genre, a thoroughly enjoyable debut album and definitely more than just an imitation. I eagerly await the band’s next work.

The Polish quartet offers one new song and “Malcontento Popolare” cover song by Alessandro Alessandroni, famous multi-instrumentalist and film score maker from Italy. For those who are familiar with prolific discography of ANTIGAMA know it’s not the first time they pay homage to horror music. Nearly ten years ago the band recorded “Zombi” cover song by Italian progressive rock band GOBLIN. ANTIGAMA's side was recorded and mixed at JNS Studio, Warsaw, Poland with Paweł Grabowski late 2015/early 2016. Mastered by James Plotkin (O.L.D., REGURGITATION, ATOMSMASHER, KHANATE).

ANIMA MORTE is a Swedish cinematic instrumental horror group established in 2004. Their music is progressive rock / horror soundtrack / instrumental, continuing the legacy of bands and artists like Goblin, Fabio Frizzi, Bruno Nicolai, Stelvio Cipriani, Rick Wakeman, Ennio Morricone and the likes. With three full albums, two 7"EPs and contributions to various compilations this is going to be the first split 12"LP in the band's discography. The band recorded two songs especially for this release: one new original song and a cover of the theme from the 1977 movie 'Il Gatto Dagli Occhi Di Giada' (aka Watch Me When I Kill) by Trans Europa Express.

Arkhamin Kirjasto was born in 2010, when Jussi Lehtisalo and Samae Koskinen started making music together. Their aim was to combine different aspects of metal, the music they both loved. Would the guttural power of Autopsy and Nihilist work well with the sheer melodiousness of early Iron Maiden and Angel Witch? Arkhamin Kirjasto's debut album, Torches Ablaze, is the answer to that question.
This versatile record opens with "The Cult of No Return", a startling riff that pays homage to Judas Priest. "Sea of Madness" takes an ethereal trip to the realms of psychedelia while "The Bitch From Hell" pairs pure glam with death-metal vocals. The undead hissing of "Thousand Snakes" and the majestic guitar noise of "Speed, Yog Sothoth" then proceed to turn the metal blueprint inside out.
Lyrically speaking, Arkhamim Kirjasto deals mainly with the green-tinted cosmic horror of Lovecraftian mythology.Koskinen is a well-known Finnish solo artist who plays guitar in the live lineup of Xysma. When he's not managing his label, Ektro Records, Lehtisalo plays in Circle and Pharaoh Overlord, among others. The pair previously worked together in Aaron Turner's Split Cranium project.

ASHKARA features ex-members of long going switzerland Crustpunk institution CWILL and play down tuned and dark, atmospheric and moody HC/Punk or modern and slowed down Crustcore with a urge to sink you into a dark abyss... The use of a violin in most songs adds alot to the moody atmosphere and is a perfect addition for this style of post-punk/post hardcore or whatever you wanna call it.
Old suspects on a new course.
After the sudden end of HC legend MIOZÄN, it become obvious very quickly for 4/5 of the band members: giving up was not an option, but to continue under the same name wasn't even up for debate. Although the main influence was to remain in the classic hardcore style of the late '80s, the new sound would be combined with classic metal influences à la IRON MAIDEN for example.
As luck would have it, Tank, Kniffel, Gerrit and Outso quickly found Johnny from true metalheads GLORYFUL, the right man for the job at the mic, invent their own brand new genre "Swordcore" and now are ready to escape the ashes, rising like a phoenix as ASH RETURN (yes, just like the song of IGNITE).
Even the cover of the debut 'The Sharp Blade Of Integrity', where Archangel Michael turns his sword against the demon, illustrates that the recordings were not an easy task. ASH RETURN spent a lot of blood, sweat and tears, alongside just as much passion, and this fact is demonstrated by every single one of the album's stylistically wide-ranging songs.
Consistent heaviness with catchy melodies, hardcore and metal easily form a symbiosis, blitzing guitar solos with fist raising singalongs, diverse vocals extending from deep growls and hardcore shouting to virtuoso Bruce Dickinson heights doing the rest. Hardcore will be Hardcore!
The first song 'Time Is The Enemy', which was released in advance, whets the appetite on first listening and suggests that the old warriors have far more than one card up their sleeves!

European pressing of the second LP from Autarch. 6 songs of sci-fi influenced emotive, melodic crust with themes of loss, resilience, and defiance in the face of ascendant fascism.
HARDCORE/DOOM/SLUDGE. AVALANCHE from Vienna/Austria giving nods to the horned one. They play heavy hardcore with a strong tendency towards stoner- and doom-metal. Instead of attempting to intimidate with epic scope or bleak mood, as does by most doom/sludge bands, these miscreants basically cut to the chase and get right in the listener's face. The 5 newly remastered tracks (3 of them are from their "among beasts" 2010 demo) are concise blasts of mostly thudding mid-tempo hardcore rage, riding easy on primal SABBATH riff-worship. The stoner riffs could work your fillings out of your teeth - the ruptured throat sounds pissed - the bass is feedback soaked and gives a solid groove and the drums sound crisp like a nuclear explosion not very far away from your living room. Some parts are slow but not glacial and the riffs are without ever hinting at bounciness. The SABBATH-ian lineage is clear, but AVALANCHE owe just as much to the frothy-mouthed intensity of SLEEP, EYEHATEGOD, OKKULTOKRATI, PENTAGRAM and their ilk. The atmosphere here is generally one of extreme hostility, and when these guys kick up the tempo the resultant is far more hardcore than anything else. Quite simply it is a heavy journey that should be tracked down by anyone into crushing, heavy music - a drug-infused jam - and you’ll be pulled right in! The one-sided, limited and handnumbered (300) LP comes with a screenprinted b-side and cover, black innersleeve and includes a digital download card
